Refugee Rap

We came from lands terrorized

with the flame of hope in our eyes

We fled in fear for our lives,

no time to say farewell, no goodbyes.

We tramped across others’ lands,

one step at a time across the sand

with our children holding onto our hands

make or break, together we must stand

All we want is to live without fear,

to raise our kids year by year.

To make a life safe and free,

put down roots, grow our family tree.

At border crossings we are made to beg

to cross to safety, to end the dread.

We crave to hear the “Pass” word said,

to walk on, to lay down to rest our heads

We risk our lives in leaky boats

attempts at safe passage we bespoke.

But Border Force in orange gloat

and turn back our means to float.

All we want is to live without fear,

to raise our kids year by year.

To make a life safe and free,

put down roots, grow our family tree.

Some have made it to the shores

of the land we hoped would open doors

But NO we are sent into the jaws

of island prisons offshore.

Here we sit in tropical heat and rot,

Denied entry to a better lot

It is meant to hinder and to stop

But behind us come another lot.

All we want is to live without fear,

to raise our kids year by year.

To make a life safe and free,

put down roots, grow our family tree.
