Departure

Image result for nursing homes

Slip away, slip away

Silently step away and be gone

from this shrunken existence,

this sense less cone of shriveled living,

this minute dot in the glory of our planet

Shrug off the heavy robe of dementia

and step lightly into the crisp evening air,

scamper across frosted grass

Pause to hear the wistful call of owls,

watch them spring into the night air

and follow

with the lightness of such freedom,

follow

Rise into the night sky,

enthralled with the absence of an aged body

and drift away,

dissolve into the horizon

an infinitesimal dot

and

gone
