There’s so many amazing things we can do
and we’ve become obsessed with all things new.
New inventions, updated technologies, alternate links,
But we aren’t as clever as we think.
Smart phones are smarter than their owners,
transplants of organs to the sick from the donors,
e-mails zapped worldwide in a blink
but we aren’t as clever as we think.
Tractors with screens have the means
to help farmers produce more beans.
But still there is hunger and not enough to drink
Because we aren’t as clever as we think.
We go to war rather than wait for it to come to us
and wonder why there’s hatred, revenge and distrust.
The poor languish on the ultimate brink
and still we believe we’re cleverer than we think.
Selling our forests has a new name
It’s called city footbridge and cricket game.
Overloaded refugee boats sink
and remarkably, we aren’t as clever as we think.
The list goes on as is plain to see
and on this night why should it bother me?
So, to poetry let us all drink
and keep believing that we’re cleverer than we think.
