Rooms Available

There is a ‘to let’ sign

in my life

A gap

with dry sore edges,

an ulcer

which won’t properly heal

You can see the rooms,

they are vacant

Please excuse

the detritus

of the previous tenants,

my sons

They have left,

‘flown the coop,’

as they say

benignly

But it isn’t

Their departures

have left me bereft

This void persists,

it hangs in the folds of the curtains,

lies dormant in empty drawers

I wander from room to room

in search of their chatter,

their questions,

their childish innocent sleep
