A Complicated Life

It’s complicated

Everything is complicated

Drought, animals dying,

Interlopers threatening

I live in a place of schisms

where none of us know

what a schism is

Children bug eyed with hunger,

stomachs distended – not with nourishment

but for the lack of it

Women lost in worry

Options seep into the arid earth

So here, I stand,

hands shackled

in more ways than one,

holding a gun

with no means to fire it

or to put it down
