Hockney’s Swimmer

A man swims in an outdoor pool with steaming water after snow covered the landscape near Bischofshofen, Austria, on January 5, 2017

Photograph: Matthias Schrader

on a day of winter snow,

a strokes through steaming water

The pool made bluer

by snow’s whiteness,

steam rises as if from the swimmer’s exertions

Verging on minimalism,

the slash of blue disturbs the white,

light is refracted and lines warped

The swimmer glides away,

vapour in his wake,

the one who can hear colour and see sound
