In A Garden

There is calm here

despite the business of its inhabitants,

in spite of what lies over the fence

The melody of wind rustling foliage,

birds’ flittering wings,

slow flap of butterflies,

A backdrop of many shades of green,

flowers are daubs of colour

in this contrived landscape

Bamboo wind chimes

give the wind phonemes

Sprinklers toss water in a spray

Ants trail across pavers

and disappear into the earth,

leaves disembark and drift down

The many bird calls,

like an orchestra tuning up,

the sky and plants alive with their song

In a garden

constant activity animates

and instils serenity
