The Elder

John McCartin

The matriarch,

the dominant one,

the one around which

all others grow

Its solidity

speaks of years in this place,

deep roots hold it firm

and touch the waters flowing beneath

Limbs stretch regal robes

It’s trunk worn with age,

its barked engraved by the years

It is the caretaker, the teacher, the nourisher

It stands strong

against the winds

and turmoils of decades
