Summer Heat

Image result for hot sun glare

Hot still heat

hangs like a leaden blanket

Leaves droop,

holding themselves inert

against the intense temperature

A small bird chirp wanely,

a heatwave day lament

yearns for coolness

Its song tires the singer

wastes pitiful energy

Abrasive white glare

scratches the surface of the day

Soil absorbs heat’s fervour,

a heat brick

giving back sun’s energy

to the evening

No reprieve

in darkness
