Like Leaves Falling

Image result for ANZAC

On an autumn April day

soldiers fell

like leaves from Plane trees

which now line roads of Remembrance

A squadron of pigeons

fly overhead

Clouds tower overhead

like a looming dawn battle

Is it enough

that we mouth in unison each year

the solemn vow

‘Lest we forget’?

When we repeat

past wrongs

against those who don uniform

and follow orders and leaders

into senseless battles

The mournful fading of the notes

of The Last Post

Tears fall like rain in trenches

Leaves in our gutters,

death in the trenches

Green thatched lawn

covers the bones of truth

we annually lay our wreathes

and walk away

from the past
