“Les Sapeurs”

'Les Sapeurs' - Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo

JOHNNY HAGLUND

To spite poverty

and the drudgery

which follows it

like  a faithful dog,

the men dress up

Leather coats, snappy boots,

checks and look at me colours,

sunglasses, pipes and dapper hats

They mince along

Kinshasa streets

drawing attention

Their swagger defined by attire,

a fantasy against drab bitumen

Tomorrow,

they will don the ordinary,

go to work,

love their families

fade into normality

Until the next

opportunity to strut

their high end threads
